Understanding excessive hair
Many of the women out there are having issues related to excessive hairs on their body. It is referred as unwanted hairs, that grow on women’s face or on her body and the result of a condition is known as hirsutism. This does not mean that women do not have facial and body hairs, they do have but are usually very fine and light in colour.
If we talk about the main difference between the typical hair on a women’s body and face and the hairs caused by hirsutism is the texture on which it depends. Unwanted or excessive hairs can be grown on women’s face, back, arms, or chest and these are usually coarse and dark. Virilisation is the pattern of hirsutism. The women who have issues with these unwanted or excessive hairs are commonly associated with male hormones.

The condition of Hirsutism is not the same as hypertrichosis, that refers to the hairs in the areas that are not dependant on make hormones. According to an Indian Journal of Dermatology, “hirsutism affects between 5 and 10 percent of women. It tends to run in families, so you may be more likely to have unwanted hair growth if your mother, sister, or other female relatives also have it. Women of Mediterranean, South Asian, and Middle Eastern heritage are also more likely to develop the condition.”
The presence of excessive hair can lower one’s self-confidence and can be dangerous too that could occur due to certain hormonal imbalances.

CAUSES OF EXCESSIVE HAIR GROTH IN WOMEN
FOLLOWING ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF FACIAL HAIR:
Why do women grow excessive or unwanted hair? Women may have facial hairs due to higher than normal levels of androgens that includes testosterone. Androgen is something, that is produced by every woman but the level typically remains low. But there are certain women, that have issues of producing estrogens above the required level.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome
If we talk about the common issue that initiates excessive facial hair, then it has to be PCOS that is the cause of hirsutism. According to American Physicians “Benign cysts that form on the ovaries can affect hormone production, leading to irregular menstrual cycles and decreased fertility”.

Following are some of the causes of facial hair that is:
- Mood changes
- pelvic pain
- sleep problems
- Adrenal gland disorders
Other forms of hormonal imbalance that cause excessive hair growth include these adrenal gland disorders:
- adrenal cancer
- adrenal tumours
- congenital adrenal hyperplasia
- Cushing’s disease
Symptoms of adrenal gland disorders include:
- high blood pressure
- bone and muscle weakness
- excess weight in the upper body
- high or low blood sugar levels
Due to the intake of certain medicines, excessive facial hair growth can appear. Following are the medicines, due to which one can experience excessive facial hair:
- anabolic steroids,
