WHAT ARE HANGNAILS?
Many of the people do not know about hangnails. Hangnails are the area attached to your nails and not are part of the nails. Hangnails are merely the skin near to the nails that form small tags and are known as skin cells.
People who have dry skin tends to have hangnails frequently. And the reason behind this is that the skin is more vulnerable to damage from water or cold weather. Therefore, if it is dry then it’s an ideal condition for skin separation. If redness or swelling occurs around your fingers, the reason could be hangnails which can press on the nerve ending and irritate them. This is what leads to the pain that almost every one of us has experienced.

You should know the fact that ripping off your hangnail is not a good habit. The hangnails are very tiny and can eventually make you hurt like hell. It is also very annoying, as it keeps on tucking with everything you touch. There are many people who do not even notice a hangnail until it has grown fully. These can also cause roughness around the nails or can initiate pain and inflammation. Hangnails are particularly bad in winter as they happen to everyone in sometime or the other. THE REASON WHY THEY HURT:
The reason due to which hangnail hurts is simply because of their location. These are present at the end of the nail and there are many blood vessels, nerves in this area that makes the area a little more sensitive.

It causes redness and swelling around the nail that eventually creates inflammation and pain. If your hangnails get inflamed, then it will not only pain but it will also cause swelling and redness around the nail.
Hangnails can also cause infection as the temptation to rip off the hangnail is common but you should not do so. If you will rip your hangnail off then it will leave the tissues inflamed which hurt like hell. It does not just makes inflammation but also makes your fingers to become prone to infection. If you will pull off the hangnail it will pull off the hangnail tissue, some of the normal skin surfaces that protects your skin by keeping out the bacteria. But ripping off can develop an infection surrounding skin.
HOW TO TREAT A HANGNAIL
You can treat your hangnail by dipping your hands in warm water that will soften your skin. Then sanitize the nail cutter by rubbing alcohol and then cut the hangnail that is close to the normal skin level. After completing this process, moisturize the area by applying lotion or even less level of alcohol. The process of moisturizing is important as it protects the skin from drying and certainly lowers the likelihood of hangnails happening again.
